Tesco for the Navan Road

14th August, 2009

Tesco have submitted a planning application for a huge store at the top of the Navan Road. It is located behind the Maples Centre and the Department of Social Welfare Office. This store would be a major retail outlet in line with their best stores like Clarehall and Clearwater.

Their planning application indicates that they would create 200 jobs. The City Council will decide whether the area merits or needs a store of this size. From my point of view, I welcome an enterprise like this that will create new jobs. My key concerns (most included in my planning observation) are:-

  • Effect on traffic on the Navan road and how this can be effectively managed.
  • The need to deal with the legitimate concerns of residents in Dunard.
  • The effect on the stores in Phibsborough and Stoneybatter.
