Closure of Respite Services

Respite Services

I raised the issue of the closure of respite services provided by the Daughters of Charity in an adjournment debate last night. I am doing all I can to help with this terrible issue. It was raised by Enda with the Taoiseach this morning.

The below is the response that I received from the Government:-

FITZGIBBON STREET GARDA STATION

Much concern has been expressed regarding the future of Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station. I have sought information from the Minister for Justice in the Senate on a number of occasions. Officers based in Fitzgibbon Street will be temporarily replaced to Mountjoy Station when refurbishment works start in Fitzgibbon Street. Despite repeated efforts to establish when these works will start or for how long they will continue, Minister Ahern has failed to answer these enquiries. I want to assure you that I will continue to seek this information from the Government and An Garda Siochana and keep you updated when those details are available. Both Councillor McAdam and I will continue to campaign for the speedy re-opening of Fitzgibbon Street Garda station.

The Lee Lesson

When George left the party I thought the sky would fall in on us. It didn’t. After the O’Donoghue resignation I thought the same would happen.

It didn’t. After the difficulties of a week ago I wasn’t sure what to think.

Thankfully this trend has held up. In fact we registered a slight gain in last week’s poll. Why? 2 reasons I think.

Firstly, people expect some of this behaviour from political parties. They make allowances for the fact that we too have differences of opinion.

Secondly, it’s not about the real world. It’s about bubble politics. What happens inside Leinster House. People have enough cares of their own, they don’t care about ours.

Cutting in Respite Care Services

Last night I attended a public meeting on the cutting of respite services for parents and family members looking after a family member with an intellectual disability. There was between 200 and 250 people at the meeting. In my many years of attending such meetings it was the most upsetting meeting I’ve ever attended.
