Update on the Water Supply Situation February 5th 2010

At the City Council Meeting on 1st February 2010 it was agreed that a further report on the water supply situation would be issued. The situation since Monday night has been somewhat difficult. Due to the continuous high level of demand being placed on the Roundwood Water Treatment Plant and the necessity to carry out essential filter bed cleaning works there has been a reduction of 15 million litres per day in output from the plant. Coupled with this a rise in demand occurred when some restrictions were eased in order to improve levels of service to customers. As a consequence of these events storage levels at Stillorgan Reservoir fell in the early days of the week.

Sorry seems to be the hardest word for the Central Bank (and for everyone else!)

The scandal regarding the waste of public money in the Central Bank should have been seen as an opportunity, not a PR problem. The disgusting profligacy that was unearthed in institutions like FAS and by other wasters were not accompanied by anything like an apology. Rather, every trick in the book was used to come up with excuses and “explanations” that were laughably transparent. The fact that only fear of exposure led to the Central Bank admitting the use of taxpayers funds to bring spouses on foreign trips is bad enough. That it is hiding behind the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act- or rather the lack of them- to withhold details of those trips is worse. That it has yet to say one simple word – the word in question being “sorry”- is really very depressing indeed.

It is also rather galling to see the Bank attempt to distract attention from its activities by criticising the C&AG for an administrative error. The fact that the spouses went on separate trips rather than one mega-junket doesn’t really lessen the offence.

But it’s not too late. The Central Bank has a new Governor and, hopefully, a new ethos. Perhaps they will yet rise to challenge and issue an apology. I wait more in hope than in expectation.

Public Meeting on Phibsborough Area Plan

Councillors Mary O’Shea, Ray McAdam and myself organised a public meeting on the City Development Plan and the impact on Phibsborough last night. The meeting was well attended with residents and local groups all making contributions. Much of these contributions were strongly coloured by the recent experiences that Phibsborough has had with planning law. The Local Area Plan was passed by Councillors but is largely not implemented. We are still subject to planning applications that plainly do not suit the local area. There are a lot of empty and (in many cases) derelict properties nearby.
